ABOUT THE FOSTER FESTIVAL
The Foster Festival is a professional theatre company located in St. Catharines, Ontario and is inspired by the work of internationally renowned Canadian playwright Norm Foster. The Foster Festival is an annual theatre Festival which fosters the development of new Canadian work. We do this through our play development program, through workshops, public readings, and, ultimately, productions of Canadian plays. The Foster Festival contributes to our local economy by providing a $3 million economic impact in St. Catharines each year.
At The Foster Festival, it is our mission to showcase the heart and humour of Norm Foster’s writing in a dedicated environment, employing the finest Canadian theatre practitioners, and to foster and support emerging and established Canadian playwrights interested in stories that are entertaining but also deeply meaningful to and reflective of our audience.
It is our Mandate to provide interest in and the study of the Canadian arts generally, to advance knowledge of, and appreciation of, arts and culture through theatrical performances and community programs, to provide education and instruction in the arts of theatre, to advance the development of theatre in Canada, and to conduct an annual Canadian theatre festival in Niagara.
The Foster Festival is a registered Not-For-Profit, Charitable Organization #81051 0180 RR0001.
ABOUT THE ARTS IN ONTARIO
The Ontario Performing Arts economic impact is over $27 billion each year and exceeds the province’s mining, forestry, agriculture, fishing, oil and gas industries combined. More than 55% of Ontarians attend plays or musicals every year. Every $1 invested in the performing arts generates $17.75. The average Ontario arts & culture tourist spends 2x as much per trip as does a typical tourist.
Perhaps even more impactful than numbers, our shows are deeply funny and lift people’s spirits which supports the wellbeing and mental health of our community. The presence of arts is linked to increased neighborhood livability, community identity, and social wellbeing.
Research ties the benefits of arts participation to the informal education and empowerment of the community, and to a sense of pride and community ownership.
